Ross and Cindy - a new school

In December, local government officials in Chandpur approached Cindy and Ross with a request to help them start an English Medium School. After a flurry of prayer and conversations, the decision has been made to proceed. Ross and Cindy will be relocating to Chandpur but keeping their current house for a while, as Cindy will be running two schools and travelling between locations. Currently, more help is desperately needed for GEMS. Teachers who could go for a month or 12 are invited to make contact with Neil Perry at the tranzsend office.

Peter and Leonora had an eventful last few weeks before leaving South Asia on October 27.The highlight was the gathering of the staff to give thanks as they launched their business ventures in the new premises - the result of a three year quest to have a place that they can call their own. They desire that this building will be a lighthouse for the community, a safe- haven, and a place where people will feel welcome and be blessed. Peter has gained weight since being home and his energies are being restored. Christine and Graeme are overseeing both the sewing unit in the south of the city and also the work in the north - the electronics, water filter and stationery units.

Pat recently visited the area where Global Hope International Network is hoping to facilitate the building of a school. For various reasons they were not able to locate the previous paperwork they needed, and subsequent conversations indicate that the way forward may not be straightforward. Meanwhile, they have begun to help the community pipe water from a mountain spring 1.6km up the valley. This entails digging a trench using a pick and a shovel in stony soil 1m deep and 1.6 km long. Pat is impressed by the commitment of this community to help their families benefit from an accessible source of clean water.

Richard and Sally and their four children had a wonderful five weeks in South Asia before Christmas. They were warmly welcomed by the staff at CCTB and Richard was able to attend a faculty meeting. They have found accommodation in Savar, and revisited the places where they had lived. The children comment that Bangladesh, “looks smaller than I thought it was,” “the food is so tasty,” and “there are so many people!” They we re also able to visit other tranzsend workers in a city nearby and holiday on the way home.

At the end of October Ilkka and Maree had to make a quick decision to return to NZ. They realized that Lora was suffering from an eating disorder and needed to get immediate medical help. They are pleased to report that she is currently undergoing treatment and making steady progress. While still in Thailand they had begun to prayerfully think about their future, especially in light of the ages of Lora, Emma and Micah. After thinking more about this in New Zealand they feel that the right decision for the family is to stay rather than return to Thailand. After discussion with tranzsend they have resigned effective the beginning of January.

Clean, filtered drinking water is now available to all staff of the jute/T shirt businesses thanks to the generosity of a Baptist church and a company in Timaru. The quality of the local water is very poor, and illnesses caused by contaminated drinking water are rampant. Taps have been strategically located around the two buildings so the women can conveniently fill their water bottles, and take some home for their families. This has been a major infrastructure project, in planning for at least two years. The second phase of the project is to make filtered water available to the local community.

Andrew and Andrea— opportunities

After eleven months in their new place Andrew and Andrea say that their work is beginning to find its feet and so are they. Andrew is at the office and Andrea is at home teaching Liam and Mahlia. However, what is really happening seems to fit in around the edges and sometimes seeps down between. Andrea is involved in the lives of a few people at a very deep and personal level in the area of counselling and mentoring. Andrew is also mentoring and discipling, and part of the leadership team of their English-speaking and expatriate led fellowship, which is also open to local people. Recently Penny, a believer, has joined the community centre and, in a short time, she has started linking into some local communities. This has been their dream for a while, and they are very glad to see it happening.

“Sharpening the Arrow” and “Passing the Baton” are two phrases I want us to explore within tranzsend this year.

“Sharpening the Arrow” is for us to clarify our unique and strategic role as the overseas mission agency of the Baptist Churches of New Zealand and to ensure that each of our overseas ministries has a clear and strategic focus. A particular outcome of this will be looking at the ongoing people resourcing of tranzsend. Who are the people, both overseas and in New Zealand, needing to be prepared to receive the baton of overseas ministry and leadership? What can we do now to ensure that this baton is passed to future generations?

I invite you to pray with us as we explore these issues. Recently, I’ve been reminded that the primary thing is to hear from God and to be obedient. Prayer is such an important part of this. I look forward to us journeying together in this.

BANZAid – Part Two

Changes in Government Aid Funding Impact BANZAid Projects

The New Zealand Government’s changes to the structure and delivery of overseas development aid are going to have a significant impact on the work of not for profit agencies.

The biggest problem in BANZAid will be the issue of geographic priorities. The Government is requiring that by the 2012/13 financial year 75% of the aid funding is allocated to the Pacific region; 15% to Southeast Asia (defined as the ASEAN countries); and only 10% for projects in the rest of the world. This will put intense pressure on funding for Bangladesh.

The original intention was that the Chandpur TCDC project would run for five years. BANZAid has had two very successful years and has now applied for a further three years under the new rules. This would enable the completion of the original five year commitment.

BANZAid has been granted 6 months funding to cover a transition period while it and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade sort out what changes may be needed to the project to meet the new structures and requirements. This takes us through to March 2011, by which time all the issues need to be sorted out.

Bruce and Karen have received another 9 month stamp in their passports which enables them to stay in their East Asian location during the processing of their temporary residency application.

While their primary focus continues to be language learning Karen volunteers in the hugely rewarding ministry of Bible distribution. This year - to date - 85,000 Bibles have been placed into the hands of visitors from across the border. She continues to visit a woman in the prison and assists in two Alpha meetings there. Bruce continues to assist in monthly men’s prison meetings; one in English and one in Cantonese. He is also enjoying regular pastoral care and mentoring of a number of people.

Paul and Sarah are in full-time language learning

They are adapting to their new culture and knuckling down into language study.

There have been some challenges, like Malachi not sleeping well, and some culture shock but overall they have settled in pretty well. Their neighbourhood is one of extremes; high rises and slum houses, very rich and very poor, boy racers and rickshaws, cheap local meals and expensive imported food.

A major problem in their city is the epic traffic jams so they are very happy that they can walk almost everywhere they need to go - language school, supermarket, local markets and the local English speaking church.

Christmas celebrations and outreach – Pray that in the midst of Christmas celebration and fellowship, events, gatherings, gift exchanges... there will be clear and sensitive presentations of God's plan of salvation through the birth of the historical Jesus.

Peter and Leonora were able to oversee the shift of the business into the new building before they left to return to New Zealand on home assignment. Their co-workers from Holland arrived early in October to set up the water filter production line in the new building. Until now they have provided the parts for assembly in Holland.

One of the struggles that have been facing in the unit is illness. About half of the staff has been physically ill and there have also been spiritual confrontations. It seems that Peter has pleural Tuberculosis, a non-contagious type of TB that is situated in the lining of the lung. He started a six month course of antibiotics at the end of September to combat this and their first priority while home is rest.

Beulah praises God for sufficient health to keep going in packed-full days in November. December and January will require mentoring by email for some thesis-writing students, as Beulah visits her daughter in North India and returns to NZ for Christmas.
